We were on the road, either via car, plane or train, almost continuously from 4:30 AM Tuesday morning until 2:00 PM Wednesday afternoon (I think that's 5:00 AM PDT). It was EXHAUSTING!! Our planes were on time and both even landed earlier than scheduled. The customs line at the Rome airport was typical Italian...no real lines, just a mob of people that inched slowly forward to the 2 small open customs booths. Once we made it through customs (at least 45 minutes later) we found our way to the train that would take us from the airport to Roma Termini, the main train station in downtown Rome. From there, we caught a 12:00 PM train to Naples and then on to Sorrento via an extremely crowded Circumvesuviana train. Rich and I found a small corner near one of the doors where we piled our luggage and wedged ourselves in for the 50 minute ride to Sorrento (and this was the Express train!).
By this time, I'm feeling like a regular pack animal!
After arriving in Sorrento, we walked @ 10 blocks to our hotel (by this time, I was REALLY dragging) only to find out that there was a "slight" (translation: MAJOR) problem with our room and the hotel management re-booked us into one of their sister hotels, the Hotel Royal. We were told that they had upgraded our room to one with a sea view and that the Hotel Royal was the nicest hotel in the Manniello chain. To get there, however, we had to walk back the way we came @ 5 blocks. Skeptically, we set out for our new home away from home. I can happily say that we have a beautiful room overlooking the Bay of Naples with a small balcony where we can sit and enjoy the afternoon sun.
